What is a Condensed Aerosol Fire Suppression System?

Here at Sovereign Extinguishing, we often get asked about condensed aerosol fire suppression systems, what they are and how they differ from traditional inert or clean agent gas suppression systems. The main difference is that they consist of a particulate mist and not a gas.

We are integrators of FirePro Condensed Aerosol units which work in a very different way to gas suppression. Instead of either depleting oxygen levels around the fire (like inert gas systems do) or cooling the burning materials (like clean agent systems do), condensed aerosol units work by directly interrupting the chemical chain reactions of the fire on a molecular level.

The fact that it is a particulate mist means that on discharge there is virtually no pressure change in the room, which negates the need for a pressure relief damper to be fitted in your protected room.

Benefits & Advantages of Condensed Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems

The main advantages of a FirePro system are as follows:-

Do not rely on room integrity

Condensed aerosol units do not rely on the room’s integrity to work correctly – whilst it’s true that the room needs to be fairly well sealed, the systems can still work in rooms where the room integrity is poor. Definitely no annual room integrity test needs to be done and passed to maintain compliance.

Very little room pressure change on discharge

This means that you will not have to have a pressure relief damper in the room, which might be useful where pressure relief is practically very difficult. Whereas gas suppression can create significant pressure on discharge (up to 250 Pa) in the room, condensed aerosol creates very little pressure on discharge.

Lifetime cost of ownership

All pressurised cylinders HAVE to be hydrostatically tested and certified every 10 years, which means that all gas suppression needs to have a major overhaul after 10 years. FirePro, on the other hand, has a life of 15 years, which means that the lifetime ownership costs against gas suppression are significantly lower, especially as costly and sometimes troublesome annual room integrity tests do not have to be done.

Where to Use FirePro Condensed Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems?

FirePro Condensed Aerosol fire suppression systems are ideal for a range of applications:

  • Rooms where the room integrity is seriously doubted or compromised – maybe to replace existing gas suppression where room integrity cannot be improved to an acceptable level.
  • Rooms where pressure relief is difficult.
  • Very small enclosures such as electrical cabinets/enclosures etc. FirePro can be a very cost-effective solution when compared to compact gas suppression solutions.
  • Areas where it is very difficult to get pressurised cylinders in and out of (underground rooms/very high rooms/ inaccessible areas).
