UPS Room Protection for a Cardiff Building Society

Case Study: UPS Room Protection for a Cardiff Building Society

A Cardiff Building Society recently identified that they needed extra UPS capacity for their on-site data centre – and following on from that, they commissioned one of our room build partners to design and deliver a new UPS Room on site.

As the fire risk contained in a UPS room is probably higher than that in the data centre itself, fire suppression was absolutely essential and our room build partner came to us for an effective solution – but with some restrictions…

  • The room is very small and very full – which meant that the wall space/footprint available to us for cylinder location and installation was very restricted. The only space available to us was behind some existing ductwork – have a look at the photos!
  • The room had poor room integrity, and its small size meant that using a clean agent gas was going to be impractical (room integrity tests with a clean agent gas are always more difficult to pass than that with inert gases). Sovereign Extinguishing’s design engineers considered this when designing the system and decided to opt for an IG55 Inert Gas Suppression system.

So the challenge was on – our partners at Kidde supplied an IG55 Inert Gas system to our design, and a system from Kentec and Vimpex, among others, was supplied to control and actuate it.

Our installation engineers attended site and installed/commissioned the system to the customer’s schedule – leaving it in active service when completed – all the time being conscious of the site’s strict COVID 19 procedures.

The room integrity test was done and passed as part of our final commissioning procedure.

Another project successfully completed by Sovereign Extinguishing – protecting businesses from fire.
