Case Study: Sovereign Helps One of the Emerging FTTP Fibre Internet Providers to Protect its R&D Work
FTTP (fibre-to-the-premises) internet providers have started making real headway into the UK market, offering full fibre internet connections – replacing the old existing copper or copper/fibre networks – and promising speeds of up to 1GB. With the massive growth of internet usage in the last few years and particularly since the pandemic, outdated copper networks are gradually being replaced by new technology fibre providing improved speeds and also bandwidths for industrial, commercial and domestic properties.
One of these such emerging companies recently asked Sovereign Extinguishing if they could help protect their newly built R&D facility against fire with an inert gas fire suppression system, and as this is a particular specialism of ours, we jumped at the chance! The customer was well versed in specifying fire suppression and as such had an existing system specification that we had to work to.
As the system was based on an inert gas, with the issues of sound resonance on discharge (have a look at our blog article on the Impact of Noise on Computer Hard Drives), Sovereign’s design department designed the system using noise suppressed discharge nozzles. The decision was made in conjunction with the customer to fit cylinders and noise suppressed/standard nozzles from Kidde.
The mechanical design was put together by Sovereign’s design department and confirmed by Kidde, and an electrical design was also put together so that the system could be installed – all the time adhering to their equipment specification.
The system underwent final commissioning, and the room was room integrity tested to complete our commissioning procedure. Delivered on budget, and to the agreed program, allowing the customer to populate the room with their equipment.
