Household Name Media Provider Returns to Sovereign Extinguishing for Fire Suppression System Design, Installation & Commissioning

Following extensive modifications to an existing FM200 fire suppression system at one of their other sites, the multi-media customer returned to us with a new challenge – to design, install and commission two new NOVEC 1230® systems on another site.

The site in question already had FM200 gas suppression coverage in their main data centre, but our customer identified that the ancillary services on site were not covered with fire suppression. This consisted of two rooms – one being a UPS/battery room and the other one housing incoming power and switchgear. The site’s capacity is due to be expanded, so protection of the infrastructure running the data centre becomes even more important than before.

Since the reduction in manufacture of FM200(HFC227ea), it has become very expensive and less available, so whilst it would have been preferable to continue to use FM200 on the new systems, this was identified as “redundant technology” and so the popular replacement NOVEC 1230® was used in line with the customer’s specification.

The two systems were designed by our in-house design department, using suppressant cylinders and hardware from Kidde Fire Products – all controlled by control panels from Kentec – again according to the customer’s specification. Both of the rooms required two cylinders within excess of 200Kg of NOVEC 1230®.

To help with alarm identification, we installed voice sounders from Vimpex instead of the traditional warning bell and electronic sounder/beacon setup. Rather than go through a bell/sounder combination to indicate what state the system is at – Vimpex’s voice sounders inform you what the system is doing and at what stage the discharge process is at.

The install began in earnest and took a little over three weeks with the final commissioning/handover taking place on the same day for the two systems.

Delivered on time and on budget to a very satisfied customer.
