Gas Suppression System installation for Dorset NHS Foundation Trust

The Challenge

Following the merger of Poole Hospital, Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, the NHS trust that operated them saw a need for an expansion at the Poole site.

This expansion included for a new pathology lab, along with a 24-hour, GP-led Urgent Treatment Centre for people with non-life threatening conditions – Outpatient, day treatment and diagnostic services also needed to expand, and the existing operating theatres needed to be upgraded, increasing the total to 15 operating theatres.

Our Solution

As is normal with operating theatre’s, they have a “Path A” and “Path B” redundant power supplies coming from different sources, as well as Generator backups to minimise the possibility of power outages.

As part of the power protection, the consultant specified Gas Suppression to be provided in the Substations, Switchrooms and UPS Battery Rooms. A total of 7 x Inert Gas systems were specified to be installed covering the two supply paths.

Sovereign Extinguishing were then instructed to install the 7 new Gas Suppression systems, and we took it as an ideal opportunity to use the new ZXT Control Panel range from Kentec. This is a development of the Sigma XT range with many added features that Sovereign and the Main Contractor saw advantageous to the end user.

The Result

System designs were produced from our in-house design department, and the mechanical cylinder pipework designs were completed in conjunction with Kidde to ensure compliance to the Design Manual of their M400 Inert Systems.

All of the systems were installed using the equipment required from our trusted partners at Kentec, Kidde, Vimpex and AP Solutions for the Pressure Relief Dampers, and the systems were commissioned and set live according to the Main Contractors schedule.

The project was delivered on-time and within budget.
